A DORADE BOX (also known as a dorade vent, cowl vent, or collector box) is a marine ventilation device used on boats and yachts. It allows fresh air to flow into the cabin, engine room, or below-deck areas while preventing rainwater, sea spray, or waves from entering.
How It WorksThe design features a low box mounted on the deck with internal baffles that create chambers. A rotatable cowl (horn-shaped scoop) on top faces into the wind to capture air, directing it down through the box and into the boat via a pipe or opening. Any water entering the cowl hits the baffles, collects at the bottom, and drains out through small weep holes (limber holes) onto the deck—while air flows freely over the baffles and below.
